Staple!
The first comic show of the year for me was STAPLE!, in Austin, Texas last weekend. The show was a one day show, on Saturday, but my adventure started on Friday afternoon.
I was flying out of the frigid north in O’hare and my flight was *supposed* to leave at 1:15pm it was delayed 4 times and we didn’t actually take off until 5pm. Not only was that a major drag, but I ended up being late to meet some friends in Austin. Stupid snow.
I finally landed and my guy, Jason DeGroot of Repercussion comics picked me up from the airport and we jetted on over to the Staple pre-con party over at Austin Books & Comics, which is a huge comic store. If you’re ever in Austin, you must check this place out. And what great hosts! Free booze, soda and water. We met up with a truly talented artist, Vo, and we did some mingling. It turns out that everyone in Austin knows Vo, no lie.
The next day, Jason and I rolled into the Red Oak Ballroom, the site of Staple 07 and got to setting up the table (pictures below). Vo arrived and we were set to sell some comics! During the course of the day, Vo and I did free sketches for those that wanted them. Okay, Vo did most of the sketches, but the dude is smokin’ good. Fan-fucking-tastic and super mellow, not like some of these other head trips. I’ll post the pics of the sketches we did tomorrow.

As mentioned earlier, I will post the sketches that Vo and I did tomorrow.
We were pretty beat from the con but we went to the after party and partied til 4am!!!! Okay, that’s a lie…we rested our dogs and met Vo at this really great restraunt where I successfully used chopsticks! Afterwhich, we kept it low-key, because my flight back home to chilly Wisconsin left at 6am, which meant that I had to be at the airport at 5am, which meant being up by 4:15am.
The flight back was on time and uneventful, even being 20 minutes early. All in all a fun time and I look forward to doing it again next year.
